Anyone out there suffering from back pain knows how debilitating it can be.  Your first inclination is to just want to lay around on a heating pad!  Definitely not the smartest thing to do as all your muscles will just tighten up.  This is when yoga can really come to the rescue.  Doing yoga while you have back pain my seem scary but as long as your Doctor or Physical Therapist gives you the OK, go for it.

Doing yoga will keep you more flexible and will help to strengthen the muscles long the spine.  Your core muscle will also be strengthened which will help with stability.  Do  little everyday, never do anything that causes pain.  It should be gentle stretching so you can feel the postures working but you should not be in real pain.

If your pain persists or is greater while doing yoga I would advise against it until you speak to your physician.  You will not want to do damage to you spine.  Take it slow and steady and you will find everyday it gets easier and easier.  You will love the way you feel.

You may want to also consider pilates for core strength.  I also did Callanetics many years go which was great if you can still find  copy!  We are talking the 80’s!
