Massage therapy relieves back pain and prevents its recurrence through several interrelated means. First, it releases tension and removes muscle stiffness, resulting in muscle relaxation. It must be noted that muscle tension often stems from stress and lack of activity. Releasing such tension brings improved muscle flexibility. At the same time, it calms the nerves and releases the body’s natural endorphins. These endorphins are chemicals that cause the person to feel good. By focusing on problematic spots in the body, massage can also smooth out knotted muscles. Furthermore, the strokes increase blood flow to the specific areas being treated. This brings cellular nourishment and facilitates healing.
Flannery cautions patients not to expect too much too soon, though. She quotes Sykora saying, “Your back pain didn’t start overnight, so don’t expect it to be cured overnight either. It’s best for chronic back pain sufferers to be on a maintenance plan for massage, once every three to four weeks.”
Sykora adds that back pain patients need to abide by lifestyle instructions from their therapists. This could include correcting one’s posture, adjusting one’s work space and changing one’s work habits. It could also include certain exercises, as well as weight loss since excess weight is an additional burden on back muscles.
Flannery reminds patients that having strong back muscles is necessary. Among the exercise that strengthen the back muscles are Yoga, Pilates, tai chi and some stretches.
